R.I.P Lakers owner Jerry Buss, 80, has died of Cancer!
Lakers owner Jerry Buss, who was hospitalized with cancer, died Monday morning at 80 years old. (Buss died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, his assistant, Bob Steiner, confirmed. Buss had been hospitalized for cancer, but the immediate cause of death was kidney failure, Steiner said.
"We not only have lost our cherished father, but a beloved man of our community and a person respected by the world basketball community," the Buss family said in a statement issued by the Lakers.
Under Buss' leadership since 1979, the Lakers became Southern California's most beloved sports franchise and a worldwide extension of Hollywood glamour. Buss acquired, nurtured and befriended a staggering array of talented players and basketball minds during his Hall of Fame tenure.
"I really tried to create a Laker image, a distinct identity," Buss said, according to the Los Angeles Times' obituary. "I mean, the Lakers are pretty damn Hollywood."
Few owners in sports history can even approach Buss' accomplishments with the Lakers, who made the NBA Finals 16 times during his 32 years in charge, winning 10 titles between 1980 and 2010. The Lakers easily are the NBA's winningest franchise since he bought the team.
And few owners have ever been more beloved by their players than Buss, who always referred to the Lakers as his extended family. Former and current players, including Magic Johnson and Kobe Bryant , reportedly visited him in the hospital before All-Star Weekend.
"He meant everything to me. He took a chance on a 17 year-old kid from out in Philadelphia. No one really saw that potential," Bryant said. "You’d be hard-pressed to find another owner who has had that kind of success. He has been able to construct championship teams, regroup, reconstruct them again, regroup, reconstruct them again—I mean, rebuild them in a very, very quick order. That’s tough to find."
Working with front-office executives Jerry West and Mitch Kupchak, Buss spent lavishly to win his titles despite lacking a huge personal fortune, often running the NBA's highest payroll while also paying high-profile coaches Pat Riley and Phil Jackson.
Always an innovative businessman, Buss paid for the Lakers through both their wild success and his groundbreaking moves to raise revenue.
He co-founded a basic-cable sports TV network, Prime Ticket, in 1985 and sold the naming rights to the Forum in 1988 to Great Western Savings & Loan at times when both now-standard strategies were unusual, adding justification for his induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.
Johnson and fellow Hall of Famers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and James Worthy formed lifelong bonds with Buss during the Lakers' run to five titles in nine years in the 1980s, when the Lakers earned a reputation as basketball's most exciting team with their glamorous “Showtime” style.
“He was a great man and an incredible friend,” Johnson tweeted Monday.
Jackson then led Shaquille O'Neal and Bryant to a threepeat from 2000-02, rekindling the Lakers mystique, before Bryant and Pau Gasol won two more titles under Jackson in 2009 and ’10.
Although Buss was proudest of his two hands full of NBA title rings, he also was a scholar, Renaissance man and bon vivant who epitomized California cool—and a certain Los Angeles lifestyle—for his entire public life.
The father of six, he rarely appeared in public without at least one attractive, much younger woman on his arm at USC football games, boxing matches, poker tournaments—and, of course, Lakers games from his private box at Staples Center, which was built under his watch.
Born Jan. 27, 1933, in Salt Lake City, Gerald Hatten Buss was raised in poverty in Wyoming but eventually earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from USC at age 24, becoming a chemistry professor and working as a chemist for the Bureau of Mines before his life took an abrupt turn into wealth and sports.
The former mathematician claimed that his fortune grew out of a $1,000 real-estate investment in a West Los Angeles apartment building with partner Frank Mariani, an aerospace engineer.
Buss purchased Jack Kent Cooke's entire Los Angeles sports empire—the struggling Lakers, the NHL’s Kings and their arena, the Forum—in a 1979 deal that also included a 13,000-acre Southern California ranch.
Buss' love of basketball was the motivation for his purchase, and he immediately worked to transform the Lakers—who had won just one NBA title since moving west from Minneapolis in 1960—into a star-powered endeavor befitting Hollywood.
At the time of the sale, the NBA had fallen into second-class status among major professional sports leagues as several teams stood on the brink of bankruptcy.
In the Lakers, Buss—who also was a world-class poker player—saw a gamble worth taking.
He was right.
In January 2013, Forbes estimated the Lakers were worth $1 billion, the second-most valuable NBA franchise behind only the New York Knicks.
"Jerry Buss helped set the league on the course it is on today," NBA commissioner David Stern told the Times. "Remember, he showed us it was about 'Showtime,' the notion that an arena can become the focal point for not just basketball, but entertainment. He made it the place to see and be seen."
Overall, the Lakers made the finals nine times in Buss' first 12 seasons while rekindling the NBA's best rivalry with the Boston Celtics, and Buss basked in the worldwide celebrity he received from his team's achievements. His womanizing and partying became Hollywood legend, with even his players struggling to keep up with Buss' lifestyle.
But Johnson's HIV diagnosis and retirement in 1991 staggered Buss and the Lakers, the owner recalled in 2011. The Lakers struggled through much of the 1990s, going through seven coaches and making just one conference finals appearance in an eight-year stretch despite the 1996 arrivals of O'Neal, who signed with Los Angeles as a free agent, and Bryant, the 17-year-old high schooler acquired in a draft-week trade.
Through the Lakers' frequent successes and occasional struggles, Buss never stopped living his Hollywood dream. He was an avid poker player, frequently participating in high-stakes tournaments, and a fixture on the Los Angeles club scene well into his 70s, when a late-night drunken-driving arrest in 2007—with a 23-year-old woman in the passenger seat of his Mercedes-Benz—prompted him to cut down on his partying.
Buss' children moved into leadership roles with the Lakers in their father's later years. Jim Buss, the team’s executive VP of player personnel and the second of Buss' six children, has taken over much of the club's primary decision-making responsibilities in the last few years, and daughter Jeanie is a longtime executive on the franchise's business side—and Jackson's longtime companion.
Yet Jerry Buss was deeply involved the Lakers' most recent major moves, including the acquisitions of Steve Nash and Dwight Howard last summer, along with the quick-trigger firing of coach Mike Brown and the surprise hiring of Mike D'Antoni early this season.
None of those moves has been particularly successful. The team is outside the top eight in the Western Conference standings at the All-Star break, and if it fails to make the playoffs could be considered one of the most disappointing teams in NBA history, if not professional sports history given expectations going into the season.
Buss served two terms as president of the NBA's Board of Governors, and was actively involved in the 2011 lockout negotiations, developing blood clots in his legs attributed to his extensive travel during that time.
He had been hospitalized several times in recent years, including a stint in July for dehydration.
Other survivors include children Johnny and Janie, who like Jim and Jeanie, are from Buss’ marriage to ex-wife Joan Mueller, whom he married when he was 19 and divorced in the early '70s, and Joey and Jesse, whom he had with former girlfriend Karen Demel.

Just a few hours after his team crushed the Super Bowl hopes of the New England Patriots, Ayanbadejo was hopped up on adrenaline and penned an early-morning letter to Brian Ellner, a marriage equality advocate with whom Ayanbadejo has previously worked, and Russell Simmons, a hip-hop mogul who has spoken out in favor of marriage equality, asking how he can use the impending publicity to raise visibility for LGBT rights.
According to Bruni, Ayanbadejo wrote, “Is there anything I can do for marriage equality or anti-bullying over the next.
The NFL player was active in Maryland's successful effort to enact marriage equality at the ballot box last year and penned a pro-equality op-ed for The Huffington Post back in 2009. Last year, he caught up with The Advocate's Michelle Garcia to talk equality in the locker room, on the field, and in the legislature.
And for you who will be in New Orleans during Super Bowl weekend. He is actually making an appearance at a gay bar in New Orleans to benefit Forum for Equality, which is a Louisiana-based gay rights organization, according to a post on their Facebook page.

LIN-TASTIC!! Jeremy Lin is the gift that keeps on giving for The NY Knicks!
Lin had the most astounding performance of his remarkable week, scoring a career-high 38 points and outdueling Bryant as the New York Knicks held off the Los Angeles Lakers 92-85. Buried deep on the bench a little more than a week ago, Lin led the Knicks to their fourth straight win, tying their longest streak of the season. His two free throws with 52 seconds left and some booming "MVP! MVP!" chants stopped the Lakers' final rally and allowed the undrafted Harvard product to pass Carmelo Anthony for the highest-scoring game by a Knicks player this season.
Iman Shumpert added 12 points for the Knicks, who are still without Anthony and Amare Stoudemire. But they have Lin, the point guard that two other teams gave up on in December and didn't get his chance in New York until three other players couldn't do the job. Bryant finished with 34 points, but he got off to a horrendous start and finished only 11 of 29 from the field. Pau Gasol had 16 points and 10 rebounds, but All-Star Andrew Bynum was only 1 of 8 for three points with 13 rebounds as the Lakers' nine-game winning streak against the Knicks was snapped.
Five of those wins had come at Madison Square Garden, where fans used to roar for Bryant.
They've got a new favorite now, and who could have ever predicted it'd be Lin? The most surprising story in the NBA came back into the game with 9:25 left after the Knicks' lead had been trimmed to three. Shumpert hit a jumper and blew by Bryant for a dunk before Lin knocked down a jumper to push the lead to 76-69 with about 8 minutes left. The lead was still eight before Lin nailed a long jumper, then was wide open after an offensive rebound for a 3-pointer from the wing, making it 84-71 as fans stood and screamed throughout the Lakers' timeout.
Lin followed his 28-point, eight-assist outing Monday in his first career start by scoring 23 points and handing out 10 assists Wednesday against Washington, becoming the first player since LeBron James in 2003 and just the sixth since 1970 to have at least 20 points and eight assists in his first two starts, according to research from the Elias Sports Bureau provided by the Knicks. He became an instant star in New York just as fans were ready to check out basketball after the Giants' Super Bowl run was over, and just when it appeared the Knicks might fall too far behind in the standings to salvage the season.

A night after needing overtime to win at Boston, the Lakers had nothing to start the game, and Lin quickly jumped on them. He started 4 of 5 as the Knicks raced to a 13-4 lead, and it grew to 19-8 as Los Angeles missed 12 of its first 13 shots.
Lin's four field goals in the first quarter matched the Lakers' total in 18 attempts (22 percent). The Lakers cut a 14-point deficit to five late in the half before Lin put the Knicks back in control. He had a turnaround jumper then spun around to leave Derek Fisher behind on his way to a layup, pushing it to 47-38 with 2:44 remaining. It was 49-41 at halftime.
Bryant started 1 of 11 before hitting five of his next six shots. The record holder at the current arena with 61 points, he also grabbed 10 rebounds but got going far too late.
Notes: The Knicks had two points taken off the board in the third quarter when the referees ruled a foul earlier in the period on Metta World Peace shouldn't have counted against the Lakers' team foul total, so the Knicks shouldn't have been in the bonus and shot free throws yet on a later foul. ... Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni said Anthony told him he was feeling better and walking without pain.
The All-Star forward is expected to be re-evaluated Sunday, but D'Antoni said he doubted Anthony would play Tuesday at Toronto. The Knicks said Anthony was expected to miss a week or two after he was hurt Monday. ... Stoudemire, whose brother died in Florida on Monday, is expected to rejoin the team at practice Monday. ... Fisher made his 400th consecutive start. He has played in 522 straight games, the longest active streak in the league. ... Fiddy reports that he and T.I. have officially ended their month-long Twitter feud.
Last month, Twitter played the battleground to yet another beef involving 50 Cent when the Queens rapper said that T.I. should have let his wife Tameka "Tiny" Cottle take the rap for their 2010 drug charges. Now, Fiddy says that the two rappers have officially squashed their feud.
According to a recent interview with Vibe, Fif and Tip quelled their Twitter feud with a phone call. 50 said that although things were pretty heated between him and the King of the South, he did make sure that there were no hard feelings between the two artists.
“We got mutual friends and I was actually in conversation with one of them, and they were around him,” 50 explained. “I didn’t tell him to get [T.I.] on the phone and [T.I.] didn’t tell him to get me on the phone, it was just there and it was like, 'Yo, you just need to talk to him because you don't know where [his anger] is coming from. We [got] into it and he had a lot of legitimate points.”

Yesterday, the buzz around the internet was that Beyonce was scheduled to give birth at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. According to the wild rumor, staff at the hospital were alerted the night before that they would be expecting a high profile patient in the VIP Labor and Delivery suite. Afterward, the hospital was flooded with calls from fans and the press.
Unfortunately for Beyonce fans, yesterday came and went and there were no signs of a baby. It looks as though Jay-z wasn’t notified of his baby’s delivery because he spent his night courtside watching the Nets take on the Hawks, instead of in a maternity ward by his wife’s side. Looks like the Bigga Baby won’t be a Christmas holiday baby after all.

A mother-of-three was shot to death in the parking lot of a McDonald's by her former husband as her children waited inside. Donna Marie Royer, 40, from Denver, was shot three times in the chest last night just after 5pm after her estranged husband Mark Royer drove up to her in the parking lot. About 90 minutes after the shooting, police found Royer's body near his truck at a trailhead near Ponderosa High School, said Parker Police Sgt Doreen Jokerst.
Court records show that Ms Royer was granted a permanent restraining order against her former husband in April, alleging domestic violence. The couple divorced last year. A Facebook page has been set up in her memory and it states that she was pregnant with her fourth child when she was killed. An eye witness told the Denver Post that the mother went to her parked car while her middle-school aged children waited inside the fast food restaurant.
A man driving a red pickup truck then drove up to her and shot her three times.
Christine Castello said she rushed to the mother's side as she was convulsing. 'I held her head as she was, like, dying,' Castello said. 'I told her that everything was going to be OK.' Her daughter was said to have screamed 'Mom' when she saw what happened. Ms Royer was pronounced dead later in the hospital. When police found the truck about eight miles away, a SWAT team used flash bang grenades but found no one inside. They later found the body a short distance away in an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
According to the Denver Post, tax records list Mark Royer as the president and Donna Royer as vice president of Renewed Hope Community Ministries, which lists the couple's former home address as its location.
Mrs Royer is said to have tolerated hostile emails and phone calls from her former husband for more than a year, but when Royer showed up at a Starbucks in March 2010, confronting her and her boyfriend and threatening her boyfriend's life, she asked for a protective order. Court documents say Royer called her cellphone repeatedly, saying her boyfriend's mother would 'mourn the loss of her son', and calling her a 'pathetic piece of s**t'. He is then said to have sent Donna two emails - one aof which used the biblical verses Proverbs 6 and 7 to describe what Donna says Mark Royer was going to do to her boyfriend. The court documents say the verses speak about the perils of adultery and the fury of jealous husbands, referring to 'an arrow piercing the liver' and 'revenge'

Her lawyer told that she learned about her divorce on TMZ. According to TMZ, Pilar Sander, soon-to-be-estranged wife of Deion Sanders, was heartbroken and surprised when she read Deion’s announcement that he decided to end his marriage with her.
Her lawyer Larry Friedman told TMZ that her top priority for the past 12.5 years has been her marriage and family. But now Pilar realized that it wasn’t the same for her husband. Friedman further told TMZ that Pilar hasn’t negotiated a divorce settlement with Deion yet, but she’s apparently into protecting their marriage and children. She says that she’s confident that Deion will come to his senses and return to his family as he has in the past.

In a recent interview with EURweb, Keri reveals that she’s been approached by thirsty celebs pursuing her as a love interest simply for a photo op and or tabloid publicity. And she said she’s not having any of that because she’s looking for love, not a marketing scheme.
“I put a lot in that category – rappers, sports players, ball players and things like that. I would never say ‘never,’ but I want something real. I want real love. I don’t want this red carpet Hollywood love. I feel like they’re easily penetrated, and that’s something that I don’t want. I don’t want publicity. I want love.

Slim Dunkin’s Alleged Killer Young Vito SURRENDERS To Police!
Brick Squad rapper Slim Dunkin’s alleged killer, Young Vito has turned himself into police on Monday (Dec. 26th)been taken into custody after the 28-year-old Atlanta rhymer turned himself into authorities on Monday (Dec. 26).
28-year-old Young Vito (born Vinson Hardimon) was named a suspect in the shooting death of rapper Slim Dunkin (born Mario Hamilton). Young Vito shot and killed Slim Dunkin on the evening of December 16th. The two reportedly got into an altercation over a piece of candy which ended up in Vito shooting and killing 24-year-old Dunkin.
Sometime after 2 p.m., attorney Derrick Wright brought Hardimon to Atlanta Police headquarters, Quinn said. From there, Hardimon was taken to the Fulton jail. Quinn pointed out that Hardimon’s appearance had changed significantly after the shooting, comparing his picture in the wanted poster to the man who showed up Monday. Young Vito is no stranger to legal trouble being charged with aggravated assault, child cruelty and carrying an illegally concealed gun in the past.

Erica Meana: VH1 Ruined My Career When They Aired That Fight! (She Also Says She NEVER Called The Cops)
"Love & Hip Hop" newcomer Erica Mena is pissy at VH1. After Monday night's fight episode involving Kimbella Vanderhee, Erica says VH1 has now ruined her "career" for actually airing the clip. She also called in to Power 105 to explain the fight and revealed she never actually called the cops. The foolishness after the cut....
Now....Erica was pissy at Kimbella for cheapening the video vixen community--ironic choice of words right?--by doing photoshoots and videos for free. And for only doing "modeling" that consists of showing off her near naked assets. Funny since a Google search of Erica Mean images turns up the exact same type of images. But I digress.
Erica told TMZ that she tried to get the champagne glass throwing, hair pulling, face slashing fight scene pulled because it doesn't put her "image" in a good light.
...The 24-year-old tells us, she was completely misrepresented in the episode -- blaming show editors for unfairly portraying her as the bad guy ... and Kimbella as an angel.
Erica tells us, "My whole image in my career is now affected by this. I wanted them to pull this clip because I don’t want to show this side of me."
Interesting. So she didn't think the fact she was fired by Kourtney Kardashian on an episode of "Kourtney & Khloe Take Miami" because she was unprofessional and missing work to get her son and other ish? That didn't "affect her career"? Oh...ok.
Erica also called in to Cherry Martinez's show on Power 105 to explain that she hooked up with Yandy to get help with her music career. And she said she's not a violent person, but she was mad people were drawing a comparison between her and Kim. And about her calling the cops--she said she was alone in an unfamiliar place so she needed someone to help her retrieve her items like her phone, which were taken by the VH1 staff. She said she didn't really call the cops, but an ambulance showed up because they both had lacerations.
