Kelly Rowland Covers ESSENCE Magazine, Talks ‘I Could Have Been Tougher’

Rowland, 32, shares behind those much-discussed references to Bey on “Dirty Laundry,” the lead single from her fourth solo album Talk a Good Game. “For a long time I wasn’t happy, but that had nothing to do with Beyoncé,” Rowland says. “That had to do with me trying to get my life in order and make better decisions for myself. I’m seeing all these wonderful things happen for her and I am happy for her. But I want a path. I want things to pop off for me, too. Not on her level but whatever my level is supposed to be.”

Finding her strength — literally — has been key to blazing new trails, Rowland tells ESSENCE. Through workouts with trainer Jeanette Jenkins and sparring sessions with former boxer Martin Snow, she’s finding her power. “I see the beauty in boxing,” she says. “It teaches me strength, physically but mostly mentally. I had to learn my strength, because for so long I could have been tougher than I was.”

Kanye West Sends Baby Clothes to Prince George

Kanye West sends baby sizes pieces of his clothing line to William and Kate for their new son Prince George.

PRINCE GEORGE is only days old and KANYE WEST and KIM KARDASHIAN have tried to bling him up.

They sent WILLIAM and KATE mini versions of Kanye’s clobber, including skinny jeans and hoodies.

A source said: “It depends if the Cambridges want to dress him in it.”

Given Kanye’s dress sense, probably not.

Gabrielle Union's Makeup Shakeup

Who says Hollywood celebs have to rely on Photoshop or airbrushing to maintain their glamorous reputations? Gabrielle Union posted photos on Instagram to prove she was born with beauty.

In side-by-side shots, Union compared her makeup-free face with a glammed-up version of herself. The difference? Very slight.

In both pics, Union shows off a new, slightly blonde look. The actress switched up her locks for the role she’s currently filming in “The Untitled Chris Rock Movie.”

Soulja Boy celebrated his 23rd birthday in style at Bootsy Bellows in West Hollywood. His Louis Vuitton cake says it all.  Sporting his signature gold chains and a gold and black shirt by Golden Hanger, he definitely turned up. He celebrated with fans and friends including rapper and long-time friend, Diamond. He performed a variety of his hits including his new "Versace" remix, “Crank That” and “Turn My Swag On”. Currently, Soulja Boy is recording and working on a new album to be released in 2014.

Former Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley is Dating a Sistah!

This according to my peeps in Chicago over at Gumbumper. The couple have been dating for more than six months, having hit it off after meeting at the gym, according to friends and acquaintances at the Hobson-Lucas wedding.

Mr. Daley, who was mayor for 22 years, retreated from politics in the spring of 2011. His wife, Maggie, died later that year.

According to her hospital profile, Dr. Cobbs, 41, earned her medical degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine in Madison. She trained as a resident at Cook County Hospital and in a transitional-year program at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Oregon.

In 2010, when Cobbs was 38 years old, Daley appointed her to the Chicago Board of Health, a position she still holds, according to the department’s website. Cobbs is the youngest medical doctor on the unpaid board.

YES!!!!!! A few duets will be released this fall with both the legendary Michael Jackson and Freddie Mercury (former lead singer of Queen). Both are two of my favorite artists that happen to be larger than life. They each had immeasurable talent & the ability to magnetize and mesmerize their audience. Both are missed. I’m excited, every now and then a lil Queen; Bohemian Rhapsody or We Will Rock You sing-a-long is necessary to get the blood pumping (sports events) and I know I’m not the only one that still gets crazy when you hear Speed Demon. (Right, how often do we really hear it? I get it, but you get my point)

According to this article in the LAist the releases will be “There Must Be More to Life Than This,” “State of Shock” and “Victory”. State of Shock was the business!!

The Version you remember may be very different. That’s because of so many complications and their very busy schedules caused the song to be released and recorded with Mick Jagger instead. “Allegedly” Completion and release of these songs were halted because of a Llama that apparently Michael brought with him to Freddie’s house to record. Uh Uh! Freddie wasn’t havin it! I would have been mad too. What in the H*** was I gonna do with a Llama?? I don’t have Llama snacks layin around!! (side eye)

I Guess Global Grind isn't enough! Def Jam founder Russell Simmons is getting back in the music game...

Russell Simmons and Universal Music Group announced the launch of their new record label All Def Music.

All Def plans to discover, nurture and promote talent found on Youtube. All Def music signed their first management deal with rapper Asher Roth.

It’s Official Stevie J and Joseline are Married! And will get their own TV Special!

On the final episode of Love & Hip Hop Atlanta, Stevie J and Joseline Hernandez shocked us all (*insert sarcasm here*), when the two made their love official, having a semi-drama filled proposal ceremony. By now, you probably watched the episode, but the short and dirty is the  intimate festive ‘ceremony’ included rose petals, a piano, champagne and two women.

Yep! Stevie brought along the mother of his youngest child, Mimi Faust, to witness their love.

Actually, she did more than witness–she too was granted a ring–which caused all kinds of commotion. By the end of the finale, Joseline had popped Stevie upside his head and Mimi laughed hysterically, while joking:

Who’s the maid now? And Joseline claimed that she was done with love. But as us reality TV junkies know, the story ain’t over yet.

The show wrapped filming over a month ago and last week, we shared photos of Joseline and Stevie sporting rumored wedding rings during an ATL radio interview. After the finale episode aired, Stevie wanted to make one thing clear, he is indeed fact married.

So what’s next for the VH1 break-out stars? Well, this is PURE speculation, but ‘folk’ are ‘saying’ that these two may get their own spin-off show. If this is the case, they wouldn’t be the first to land a spin-off from the Love & Hip Hop Franchise. After spending two seasons on the original Love & Hip Hop (NY), rapper Jim Jones and his fiance, Chrissy Lampkin, threw up the deuces and snagged ‘Chrissy & Mr. Jones‘. And Stevie J thinks that he and his Puerto Rican Princes can do the same thing. In an interview with Power 107.5 DJ Big Bink‘s, Stevie commented on spin-off rumors:

Well, yeah, absolutely. We really appreciate “Love & Hip Hop” the franchise and you know, we definitely in discussions about the spinoff right now.

From what we ‘hear’, the spin-off would start off as a wedding special and if the ratings speak volumes, they’ll be given the green light for a full on spin-off. Only time will tell. What are YOUR thoughts on a wedding special or spin-off? Can you digest 60 minutes of all things Stevie J and Joseline or should they stick to the LHHA script?

DMX Explains Bankruptcy Filing

Last week rapper DMX filed for bankruptcy in New York claiming up to $10 million in debt

DMX explains why he did it...Reps for the rapper tell Rumor Fix DMX filed for bankruptcy so he can perform overseas.

Apparently while DMX was in jail his old management team failed to make his child support payments making X ineligible for a passport.

The rep tells Rumor Fix,

“The purpose of this bankruptcy filing is for reorganization so he can perform for his fans overseas.”

Jay-Z covers the fall men’s fashion issue of T Magazine. In the interview with Zadie Smith, Jay discusses his music, his life, politics and, oh yeah, the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn. At a little table in a homey Italian restaurant on Mulberry Street in New York is where the interview took place. It’s where Jay likes to eat his chicken parmesan. He’s not late. He’s dressed like a kid, in cap and jeans, if he said he was 30 you wouldn’t doubt him. (He’s 42.) He’s overwhelmingly familiar, which is of course a function of his fame ­ — rap superstar, husband of Beyoncé, minority owner of the Nets, whose new home, the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, will open this month.

No one stares. The self-proclaimed “greatest rapper alive” is treated like a piece of the furniture. Ah, but there’s always one: a preppy white guy discreetly operating his iPhone’s reverse-camera function. It’s an old hustle; it makes Jay chuckle: “They think they’re the first one who’s ever come up with that concept.”

According to my girl Sandra Rose, BET is grooming Atlanta rapper Miss Mykie to take over the ’106 & Park’ hosting duties from outgoing co-hosts Rocsi Diaz and Terrence J.  Miss Mykie is among the fresh new faces that the BET honchos are looking for to revive sagging TV ratings.

Check out some facts about Miss Mykie: she’s an AKA. Up until a few months ago she was a school teacher, but she still managed to build a buzz that garnered her 1 million YouTube hits. She’s a feminist with a twist (she believes women should uplift their men).

Miss Mykie has been grinding as an independent artist for the past few years, and now her efforts are paying off with the opportunity to host BET 106 & Park.

Her first single and video, “Dear Hater” garnered quite a buzz for the new artist.

She has over 1 million YouTube hits and she’s released 5 projects (mixtapes and EP’s) with collaborations with Snoop Dogg, Rick Ross, Drake, Paul Wall and Kirko Bangz, just to name a few.

September 11th marked Miss Mykie’s 3rd time on BET 106 & Park, where she is a favorite in the search for new hosts.

Nas and kelis REUNITE….Well sorta!

At a recent party for a cute little baby, Nas and his ex-wife Kelis were spotted spending some civil QT together, and with their son Knight.

Cute!  We're not sure if Kelis is still off the market and dating other people, but Nas made it clear today that he and his ex-wife are just friends after their divorce 3 years ago.  And there's no romantic reunion in their future.

He told TMZ--while out to diner with Ke Ke that things are all good despite the child support and medical expenses battle:

Now, Nas tells TMZ, the two are trying to put the past behind them in order to develop a healthy relationship for the benefit of their 3-year-old son Knight -- but they are NOT reuniting romantically.

The rapper says they've been on good terms for a while now and he hopes it will continue. Nas and Kelis even grabbed dinner last night in L.A. together. Can't lie.  We kinda loved these two together.

NeNe Leakes Says Evelyn Lozada Should ‘Be Quiet’ About Domestic Abuse Incident

NeNe Leakes, who became arguably a household name as the break-out star on Bravo’s the Real Housewives of Atlanta, has been making big career moves. In addition to joining forces with Kim Kardashian to launch her own shoe, Tuesday night, NBC’s The New Normal (which NeNe is a cast member of) aired. And recently the very vocal reality star did an interview with Essence.Com, where she discussed her new TV gig and business ventures and surprisingly weighed in on the domestic violence dispute between Evelyn Lozada and Chad Johnson. In short, NeNe held no cut-cards and advised Evelyn to keep her mouth shut.

She explained:

 “I wanted to reach out to her, but I didn’t. I feel like when people are going through something I’m confused about whether I should say something or not, because so many people are saying stuff to them. I don’t talk to Evelyn regularly, but I do know her, we do text if we need something from another. The only advice I would have for Evelyn is to be quiet. I wouldn’t say anything else. To me, it makes matters worse and I would be quiet and try to it handle privately“

Antwaun Cook Admits Cheating with Fantasia

Two years ago when Fantasia Barrino's baby daddy's wife Paula Cook tried to sue Fantasia under North Carolina's alienation of affection law for cheating with her husband Antwaun Cook, Antwuan testified in court that he and his wife had been separated before he and Fantasia hooked up 

Welp, Antwuan just signed papers admitting he and his wife weren't actually separated at the time and that he was cheating on her, paving the way for Paula to take Fantasia to the cleaners...

"The parties consent and agree that Palintiff [Paula] and Defendant [Antwaun] are husband and wife having been lawfully married to each other on October 1, 2005 and separated on June 16, 2010," the docs state. 

By consenting to the date of separation being June 2010, Antwaun is admitting that he cheated on his wife with Fantasia.

Given Antwaun's admission of adultery, if his estranged wife desired to do so she would now legally sue Fantasia for Alienation of Affection, which is a North Carolina law in which one can sue the third party who "alienates" the affections of one spouse from the other spouse.

Just last year an unnamed jilted wife was awarded a $30 million "bench verdict" and the year before a $5.9 million case was awarded to the innocent spouse.

Mel B GOES TOPLESS For Breast Cancer, Reveals She Found A Lump

Mel B recently popped her top for the new CoppaFeel! campaign for breast cancer awareness.  Based in the UK, the organization spreads information to women and men between 18-30 about checking themselves for breast cancer. 

In the ad, which appears in new COSMOPOLITAN UK issues, Mel and her husband Stephen Belafonte put their own spin on Janet Jackson's iconic ROLLING STONE cover. Stephen really enjoyed the shoot (surprise surprise) saying, 'I’m a boob man so I had absolutely no problem doing this shoot or helping my wife check her breasts."

Inside the mag, Mel revealed her own breast cancer scare.  "I found a lump when I was 17 and freaked out. It turned out it was nothing but it terrified me. Ever since, I’ve always been one for checking, then double checking."

Now, she's also training her daughter.  "I have three daughters and one stepdaughter so I’ll show them as they get older. My eldest, Phoenix, 13, does it already."

She later joked that she and her former bandmates used to cop a feel as well.  "I love boobs. Me and the other Spice Girls are always having a feel of each other’s – Geri came up behind me and grabbed mine the other day."

Too Much, Too Little, Too Later Fifty & Floyd…OVER!

The bromance (brother romance) between Floyd Mayweather and Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson has come to an abrupt end. After Floyd was released from prison this summer, rumors swirled that the two were beefing over Floyd’s fiance, Shantel Jackson.

And while this rumor was never confirmed, 50 did confirm that the two are no longer as tight as they once were.

During an interview with the “Rickey Smiley Morning Show” he confirmed:

“[The issues between us] really comes from … everybody around him is waiting on the next time he feels generous. And I have a lot [of money], so I don’t wait for nobody. I’ll go do what I gotta do. I don’t have to sit around and wait for the next time he feels like giving somebody something. Me and Floyd is always gonna be cool. He is different. [There's been] a different side of Floyd coming out of the pen. That’s all.”

Apple Unveils the iPhone 5

Apple has unveiled a taller, 4G-enabled iPhone. Apple CEO Tim Cook and vice president of marketing Phil Schiller took the stage at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, where Apple has held many past product launches, to release the newest, largest, fastest iPhone ever.

 “It’s an absolute jewel,” Schiller told the crowd of fans.

Made entirely of glass and aluminum, Schiller said the new version of Apple’s flagship device is 18 percent thinner than before and 20 percent lighter than the 4S. It sports a larger, 4-inch screen, meaning the company could fit in an extra row of icons.

The iPhone 5 will come in black and white, and will start shipping on Sept. 21 in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., France, Germany, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. By the end of the year, it will be sold in 100 countries via 240 carrier partners around the world. Pre-orders begin Sept. 14.

The smartphone will be available for $199 (16GB), $299 (32GB), and $399 (64GB) with a two-year contract. The price of the iPhone 4S 16GB drops to $99, while the 8GB iPhone 4 will be available for free.

The iPhone 5′s camera boasts an 8-megapixel sensor, backside illumination, a hybrid IR filter, five-element lens, f/2.4 aperture – and it’s all 25 percent smaller than earlier iPhone cameras. It also offers 1080p HD video capture, better stabilization, face detection for up to 10 faces, and the ability to take photos while recording video. There’s also a Panorama mode.

The iPhone 5 will run a revamped A6 processor, which Apple said boasts a 2x faster CPU and 2x faster graphics than the A5. The new chip is also 22 percent smaller.

That processor will be able to take advantages of games like EA’s Real Racing 3, which includes a time-shifted multi-player feature and will be available in the App Store later this year, according to EA.

Apple said the iPhone 5′s battery life will top that of the iPhone 4S with eight hours of talk time, 10 hours of video playback, 40 hours of music playback, eight hours of LTE browsing, and 225 hours of standby.

Eric & Jennifer Williams BEEFING Over Court Dates On TWITTER!

Estranged couple Jennifer Williams and Eric Williams had a Twitter spat recently over why their divorce is taking so long.  Former NBA baller Eric Williams is beefing with estranged wife Jennifer Williams over a few missed phone calls and prolonged court dates.  It all started when Eric lashed out at former 'Basketball Wives" star Jen for for not calling him.  Jennifer, who seemed super annoyed, responded that she's sick of him dragging out their court date and he doesn't pick up personal calls either.  It seems like they could have been divorced by now, but Eric is apparently stalling.  She's clearly over this marriage.  And so is the rest of the public.

Eric then insinuated that Jen only tweets him when she wants attention and isn't really handling "their" business behind the scenes.

Shonda, who has been tweeting about being a new mom, was all smiles at the event in Beverly Hills as she now has another hit show on ABC!

Kerry sat next to co-star Katie Lowes on a panel about the hit series.

Columbus Short, who's also on the show, got bright and festive for the event.

Later, Kerry posed with the cast Bellamy Young, Jeff Perry, Tony, Katie, Columbus, Darby Stanchfield and Guillermo Diaz.

Season 2 of "Scandal" starts on September 27.  And we're counting down the days!

Elle Varner GETS FLIRTY For Premiere DIGITAL COVER Of STUFF FLY PEOPLE LIKE

Singer Elle Varner, who counts First Lady Michelle Obama and daughter Malia among her biggest fans, stars in the first digital cover for SFPL.  Inside, she dishes on finding out she had fans at The White House saying, “I couldn’t believe it. I thought at first it was just a rumor, but then I watched [the video of Michelle Obama saying her daughter are listening to Elle Varner] and it was definitely real."

 “I was shocked but also proud that the White House approves my music for their precious daughters to listen to. I made an album that simply told my story, and that it could be appreciated by both a 14-year-old and her mother [is amazing].”

And when asked about her unique musical style the singer revealed a desire to bring The Blues back to R&B.  She said,

“I think Rhythm and Blues is missing the “Blues” and that emotional hits-you-in-your-chest feeling that it was built on. The rhythms are there but the quality and content just aren’t what they used to be. Luckily, there are a lot of artists right now not only making great R&B, but getting some mainstream shine as well. I plan to take my music to a worldwide level so R&B isn’t the one trying to squeeze into the picture, but actually standing proud in the center of the photo.”

When the "Perfectly Imperfect" singer was asked to give her own definition of "fly," she said, “…the way you treat people, the things you say and do more than what you are wearing, driving, etc. It’s the love that surrounds you and the love you give.”
