Kelly Rowland Covers ESSENCE Magazine, Talks ‘I Could Have Been Tougher’

Rowland, 32, shares behind those much-discussed references to Bey on “Dirty Laundry,” the lead single from her fourth solo album Talk a Good Game. “For a long time I wasn’t happy, but that had nothing to do with Beyoncé,” Rowland says. “That had to do with me trying to get my life in order and make better decisions for myself. I’m seeing all these wonderful things happen for her and I am happy for her. But I want a path. I want things to pop off for me, too. Not on her level but whatever my level is supposed to be.”

Finding her strength — literally — has been key to blazing new trails, Rowland tells ESSENCE. Through workouts with trainer Jeanette Jenkins and sparring sessions with former boxer Martin Snow, she’s finding her power. “I see the beauty in boxing,” she says. “It teaches me strength, physically but mostly mentally. I had to learn my strength, because for so long I could have been tougher than I was.”

Kanye West Sends Baby Clothes to Prince George

Kanye West sends baby sizes pieces of his clothing line to William and Kate for their new son Prince George.

PRINCE GEORGE is only days old and KANYE WEST and KIM KARDASHIAN have tried to bling him up.

They sent WILLIAM and KATE mini versions of Kanye’s clobber, including skinny jeans and hoodies.

A source said: “It depends if the Cambridges want to dress him in it.”

Given Kanye’s dress sense, probably not.

Gabrielle Union's Makeup Shakeup

Who says Hollywood celebs have to rely on Photoshop or airbrushing to maintain their glamorous reputations? Gabrielle Union posted photos on Instagram to prove she was born with beauty.

In side-by-side shots, Union compared her makeup-free face with a glammed-up version of herself. The difference? Very slight.

In both pics, Union shows off a new, slightly blonde look. The actress switched up her locks for the role she’s currently filming in “The Untitled Chris Rock Movie.”

Soulja Boy celebrated his 23rd birthday in style at Bootsy Bellows in West Hollywood. His Louis Vuitton cake says it all.  Sporting his signature gold chains and a gold and black shirt by Golden Hanger, he definitely turned up. He celebrated with fans and friends including rapper and long-time friend, Diamond. He performed a variety of his hits including his new "Versace" remix, “Crank That” and “Turn My Swag On”. Currently, Soulja Boy is recording and working on a new album to be released in 2014.

Former Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley is Dating a Sistah!

This according to my peeps in Chicago over at Gumbumper. The couple have been dating for more than six months, having hit it off after meeting at the gym, according to friends and acquaintances at the Hobson-Lucas wedding.

Mr. Daley, who was mayor for 22 years, retreated from politics in the spring of 2011. His wife, Maggie, died later that year.

According to her hospital profile, Dr. Cobbs, 41, earned her medical degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine in Madison. She trained as a resident at Cook County Hospital and in a transitional-year program at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Oregon.

In 2010, when Cobbs was 38 years old, Daley appointed her to the Chicago Board of Health, a position she still holds, according to the department’s website. Cobbs is the youngest medical doctor on the unpaid board.

According to this article in the LAist the releases will be “There Must Be More to Life Than This,” “State of Shock” and “Victory”. State of Shock was the business!!

The Version you remember may be very different. That’s because of so many complications and their very busy schedules caused the song to be released and recorded with Mick Jagger instead. “Allegedly” Completion and release of these songs were halted because of a Llama that apparently Michael brought with him to Freddie’s house to record. Uh Uh! Freddie wasn’t havin it! I would have been mad too. What in the H*** was I gonna do with a Llama?? I don’t have Llama snacks layin around!! (side eye)

Russell Simmons and Universal Music Group announced the launch of their new record label All Def Music.

All Def plans to discover, nurture and promote talent found on Youtube. All Def music signed their first management deal with rapper Asher Roth.

It’s Official Stevie J and Joseline are Married! And will get their own TV Special!

On the final episode of Love & Hip Hop Atlanta, Stevie J and Joseline Hernandez shocked us all (*insert sarcasm here*), when the two made their love official, having a semi-drama filled proposal ceremony. By now, you probably watched the episode, but the short and dirty is the  intimate festive ‘ceremony’ included rose petals, a piano, champagne and two women.

Yep! Stevie brought along the mother of his youngest child, Mimi Faust, to witness their love.

Actually, she did more than witness–she too was granted a ring–which caused all kinds of commotion. By the end of the finale, Joseline had popped Stevie upside his head and Mimi laughed hysterically, while joking:

Who’s the maid now? And Joseline claimed that she was done with love. But as us reality TV junkies know, the story ain’t over yet.

The show wrapped filming over a month ago and last week, we shared photos of Joseline and Stevie sporting rumored wedding rings during an ATL radio interview. After the finale episode aired, Stevie wanted to make one thing clear, he is indeed fact married.

So what’s next for the VH1 break-out stars? Well, this is PURE speculation, but ‘folk’ are ‘saying’ that these two may get their own spin-off show. If this is the case, they wouldn’t be the first to land a spin-off from the Love & Hip Hop Franchise. After spending two seasons on the original Love & Hip Hop (NY), rapper Jim Jones and his fiance, Chrissy Lampkin, threw up the deuces and snagged ‘Chrissy & Mr. Jones‘. And Stevie J thinks that he and his Puerto Rican Princes can do the same thing. In an interview with Power 107.5 DJ Big Bink‘s, Stevie commented on spin-off rumors:

Well, yeah, absolutely. We really appreciate “Love & Hip Hop” the franchise and you know, we definitely in discussions about the spinoff right now.

From what we ‘hear’, the spin-off would start off as a wedding special and if the ratings speak volumes, they’ll be given the green light for a full on spin-off. Only time will tell. What are YOUR thoughts on a wedding special or spin-off? Can you digest 60 minutes of all things Stevie J and Joseline or should they stick to the LHHA script?

DMX Explains Bankruptcy Filing

Last week rapper DMX filed for bankruptcy in New York claiming up to $10 million in debt

DMX explains why he did it...Reps for the rapper tell Rumor Fix DMX filed for bankruptcy so he can perform overseas.

Apparently while DMX was in jail his old management team failed to make his child support payments making X ineligible for a passport.

The rep tells Rumor Fix,

“The purpose of this bankruptcy filing is for reorganization so he can perform for his fans overseas.”

The Celebs show out for Hit The 2013 UNCF 'Evening Of Stars' Event

An emcee of the evening Tracee Ellis Ross was spotted chatting up "Glee" actress Amber Riley at the UNCF Evening With The Stars event at the Pasadena Civic Center over the weekend.

The two hour special (which will air on BET) encompasses some of the biggest names in entertainment, education, politics and sports who will share the stage with students whose lives have been changed by education made possible by UNCF and its programs.

Tracee co-presented during the evening with Keenan Ivory Wayans.

A little more about this red carpet event: The event is a particularly special sponsorship for Buick because of the brand's dedication to educating young people. In 2011, The General Motors Foundation and Buick launched the Buick Achievers Scholarship Program to award scholarships to students interested in science, technology, engineering, math and related fields. The Buick Achievers Program now dedicates up to 4.5 million dollars annually to students who demonstrate excellence in the classroom and community, and are the first in their family to attend college.

The show will air on BET, January 27th, 2013 at 10p/9c.

Chris Brown Back On Twitter And Nude Rihanna

Chris Brown returned to Twitter everyone!! We knew he couldn’t stay away for that long. He disappeared after a beef with comedian, Jenny Johnson. He also is posting pics on Instagram with Rihanna (surprise, surprise.) Rihanna launches her Nude fragrance at Macy’s.

Chris Brown took to his social network and posted a photo of him and Rihanna smoking and only covered in a blanket or was she naked and he edited the photo?!

Rihanna took to Instagram and posted a new gold plated choker for her Nude launch.

The Nude fragrance launch took place in Century City, California at Macy’s Westfield Century City. She wore a white lace dress designed by Nini Nguyen (who picked out the choker) and black Tom Ford pumps.

These two are starting to scare me!

Kerry Washington Covers Uptown: Reveals ‘Sometimes I Feel Like I Can’t Do This Anymore’

Scandal actress Kerry Washington is looking stunning in black as she poses in a film noir style shoot for Uptown magazine’s Dec/Jan issue. Inside, she dishes on the controversy around her new film Django Unchained being a slavery flick, as well as her multiethnic family and the range of roles she chooses to play. She also reveals that she’s wanted to quit the entertainment industry for good plenty of times.

Peep the excerpts:

On what drew her to Django and the controversy around the movie:

“I’ve never seen slavery dealt with this way before in film. So often it’s a white character who’s the savior of black people.” “We should have a plethora of visions and interpretations of who we are as a nation.” But she admits, “This is not necessarily the film I would make about slavery.”

On growing up in the Washington household and her multi-cultural family:

She still remembers the lively, sometimes heated, discussions on race and society around the dinner table. “My family’s very multiethnic,” she says. “When we get together for the holidays, it is the U.N., across the board.”

On the culture shock when she enrolled in an upper east side private school:

Prior to Spence, Washington thought her working-middle-class family was balling. “We had a microwave and two cars. We had a dishwasher before anyone in the building,” she says. “And then you go to this other world, and it’s, ‘Oh, we’re taking a helicopter to your house in the Hamptons?’ For a lot of classmates, I knew the only other black women they’d known were their domestic help.”

On leaving the entertainment business:

“Sometimes I feel like I can’t do this anymore.” Almost once a year, her hair and makeup folks hear it: “I am done! I’m so done.”

On why she’s no saint:

“If you look at my body of work, I’ve always taken huge risks. I’ve played prostitutes, drug addicts, pimping lesbians. I do work I’m drawn to.”

Mike Tyson ADMITS He Was HIGH ON COCAINE During "The Hangover" -- 'I Was A Mess...I Was A Pig'

Remember Mike Tyson's famed appearance in the 2009 flick The Hangover.  The former boxer recently revealed on "In Depth With Graham Bensinger," that he was high as a kite during the taping. 

Speaking of his co-stars Ed Helms, Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, and Justin Bartha, he said, "They had to know I was messed up. I couldn't talk. I had the cocaine talk. So those guys are just beautiful people. They had my back, and I appreciate that and stuff, then they asked me to come back [in The Hangover 2]."  He added that working with the cast is what helped him clean up his act. Ad to the cast's defense...even a sober Mike Tyson's "talk" isn't that easy to understand.

Also, he revealed that while he and actress Robin Givens were divorcing (yet still sleeping together), he caught her and Brad Pitt returning home together.  Robin Givens had the world's heavywight champ and one of the world's sexiest men all at the same damn time! 

Mike added, 'I was mad as hell. I was going to...you should have saw his face when he saw me.  But Brad's face is still in tact...

Fans of the former heavyweight can catch him telling more wild stories from his past when he hits the road next year.  The two-hour, tell-all show was directed by Spike Lee and wlll have Mike talking about his divorces, rape conviction and the time he chomped on Evander Holyfield's ear. He tweeted, "My #OneManShow is hitting the road on a NATIONAL TOUR starting February 2013."

2 Aspiring Rappers Arrested For Trying To Extort & Kidnap Record Producer

Two would be rappers were so thirsty for a recording deal that they kidnapped and extorted a fledgling record producer for $50 grand. Seriously.

Record executives get extorted all the time. But it's a problem when said wannabe record exec is the son of a prominent Goldman Sachs broker and has no problem going straight to the cops.

The New York Daily News reports that on Thursday (November 29th) 27 year-old Jon Fontein, son of Goldman Sachs broker Andrew Fontein, initially agreed to pay 33 year-old Ryan Mixon and 28 year-old Andres Lozano a cool $50,000 to make a record. But, at the end of the meeting the three were having at Pera Soho in NYC, Fontein tried to back out of the deal.

However, sources say Mixon (who is from New Britain, Conn.) and Lozano (who is from Washington Heights) threatened to kill Fontein's girlfriend, and his family, if he didn't come through with the funds as allegedly promised. This is where the struggle increases exponentially.

The New York Times reports that one of the men brandished a gun and forced Fontein to take a cab ride with them up to the Apple Store on 5th Ave and 58th St., where he was prompted to buy $3,800 in products, including warranties.

The next day, Fontein went straight to the police. While Fontein met with detectives, one of the would be rappers sent a menacing text to Fontein about dropping off the money at Pera Soho.

When Mixon and Lozano arrive, the cops were waiting, posing as customers, and they were promptly arrested. The duo was booked on charges including kidnapping, robbery and extortion.

Allen Iverson's Atlanta Mansion Foreclosed & Up For Auction

Allen Iverson broke many ankles in the NBA, but can't catch a break when it comes to his finances. An Atlanta mansion the former NBA All-Star and MVP owns has been foreclosed and is being put up for auction this week.

TMZ reports that the home, which Iverson purchased back in 2010 for $4.5 million in 2010, is being sold at auction on December 4th. According to records, A.I. defaulted on his mortgage payments and the property was foreclosed. The only way Iverson will be able to save his ATL crib, and all of its contents, from being sold is if he pays for it in all cash by the Tuesday deadline.

But considering the VA native with the famed money troubles is in the midst of a bitter divorce and hasn't been dropping buckets on any pro basketball courts, that seems highly unlikely. Unless he sold A LOT of the Reebok "The Question" retros.

Speaking of questions—A.I. paid $4.5 milli for a mansion in Atlanta? His real estate agent is a world class thief.

Nick and Mariah Fighting Over Snide Comments

Nick Cannon is in hot water with Mariah Carey for talking smack about her parenting skills...

Livid MARIAH CAREY would like to cram hubby NICK CANNON’s words back into his over-sized mouth, after he made fun of her parenting skills on national TV – and she’s ordered him to put a lid on his insulting wisecracks, say sources.

The “American Idol” judge ruled that her hubby was out of order after he spouted off on Anderson Cooper’s show “Anderson Live” about how he and the 43-year-old superstar are raising their 19-month-old twins Monroe and Moroccan.

The part-time comedian blurted out: “The kids run the house. My wife is being the diva that she is. I’m trying to keep up with them.”

When Cooper asked the “America’s Got Talent” host, 32, who changes more diapers, Cannon proudly pointed to himself and said: “Me!”

While he admitted they both get their hands dirty, he stressed: “I get that duty a little bit more.”

Mariah “was incensed,” an insider told several sources Nick has made diva jokes before, but never relating to Mariah being a parent.

Claiming he was the main diaper-changer made her feel like he was saying she was less than a perfect mother.

“She’s trying so hard to do well on ‘American Idol’ and thinks this will make her look bad.” Mariah signed a whopping $18 million deal to join the “Idol” judges’ panel, in part so she could have a job that allowed her more time with her twins, say sources.

That’s one reason why Nick’s offhand remarks struck such a sour note with his sensitive wife.

“Sometimes Nick lets his mouth run faster than his brain,” confided a friend. “But he should have known he was going to tick off Mariah with his parenting potshots.”

Mariah used to revel in her diva reputation, said the insider, “but now that she’s a mom, she wants to be seen first and foremost as just that.”

“What Nick said made her feel small, and he’s had hell to pay at home. Mariah considers parenting a 50/50 proposition and feels that she changes just as many diapers as Nick.

“She assured me Nick won’t be giving any more interviews like that, and she’ll even shut down his Twitter account before he makes a fool of her again.

“Nick knows that – and it’s put the fear of God into him!”

Nene Leakes Responds To Criticism Over Ebony Magazine Cover

Last month, Nene Leakes was the talk of the town when she snagged Ebony’s Annual Power 100 cover complete with a photo of her bathing in diamonds.  Inside, she posed in a gown made of money while playing off of her favorite saying, “I’m Rich B-tch!”

But not everybody was thrilled to see Nene Leakes flaunting her reality show riches while sitting in a bathtub covered in jewels.  As soon as the cover was revealed online, Ebony Magazine was slammed  for glorifying a reality star, with some readers questioning if the magazine had lost their credibility.

Nene recently sat down for a chat with The Daily Beast and didn’t hold back as she responded to the criticism while saying that African Americans can be so negative towards their own people.  She also made comparisons to how her people responded to her success versus reality star Kim Kardashian, who was featured in a sex tape.

On the criticism of her Ebony Magazine cover

I absolutely deserve to be on the cover. This cover is about money, power, and respect. And it’s about a come-up story and I’m the one that had that story this year … Not only did I come out as a reality star that was very boisterous and vivacious and outspoken and all those things. I flipped that into money and respect. And a lot of people can’t do that.

On only getting negative feedback from her own race

But listen to me, definitely all of the negative feedback definitely came from my own; African Americans were the ones that were the most negative,  and it’s so funny to me because I would call [the editor] over at Ebony and she would say ‘Girl please, glass houses. That’s all it is. They don’t want to see you on the cover, they don’t really understand the reason why you’re on the cover, they don’t know your story.’

On her success being no different than Kim Kardashian’s

It’s true and I know you’ve heard it a million times, [African Americans] just don’t support one another, But it’s OK for you to go pick up a magazine cover with Kim Kardashian. She’s my girl. We are cool. We talk. We do drinks and all of that. But her story ain’t no different than mine. You know what I mean? I might’ve worked at the strip club, but she made a sex tape.

Do you think some people’s reaction to Nene’s success is reflective of the “crab in the barrel” mentality?  Unfortunately, not everyone will be happy for your success.

Nick Gordon Was Listening to Whitney Houston When He Got Pulled Over

Police dash cam footage reveals Bobbi Kristina's ex boyfriend / play brother, Nick Gordon, was blasting Whitney Houston's, I Will Always Love You' when he was pulled over by police for reckless driving...

In the video you can clearly hear Whitney Houston coming from Nick Gordon's car stereo while he tries to explain to officers that he didn't realize he was driving so fast.

Earlier that same day Bobbi Kristina totaled her own car shortly after news reports that she and Nick Gordon were no longer engaged.

Nick is expected in court to face charges stemming from his arrest on February 12th.
