Petition Launched to Remove Tyler Perry’s New Shows from OWN: ‘Stop Supporting Racist Stereotypes!’ Uh, oh. Somebody’s Aunti and second cousin is none too pleased with Tyler Perry’s two new shows on Oprah’s OWN Network. And you know what we do when we don’t like something on TV, take our complaints and talents to Change.org.
So what’s the issue here? Last week, TP’s soap opera The Haves and The Have Nots, debuted earning 1.77 million viewers in its first hour and the second drawing 1.8 million viewers — the highest-rated debut in OWN network history. His second show, a comedy , Love Thy Neighbor followed with the second highest debut in the channel’s history, with 1.8 million viewers of its own.
But critics say despite ratings, they have serious beef with his content being heavily sexist, elitist and racially insensitive. The author of the petition writes:
For decades Oprah Winfrey has used her television show to educate, empower, and uplift people of all races to be better versions of themselves. OWN has committed to be an extension of this work. Where it is clear that neither Oprah or Tyler Perry are not experts on race and racism, they have also refused to utilize feedback from the conscious Black community and scholars on racism regarding the damage that Tyler Perry and his brand of entertainment perpetuate against the Black community. Stop supporting racist stereotypes on OWN and remove Tyler Perry programming! But you LOVE R.H.o.A RIGHT?
With a little over 200 signatures, it doesn’t seem to be having much of an impact–yet. But what are your thoughts–do they have a point, in suggesting Tyler Perry’s content does’t belong on OWN? Or is this just another tired petition that has little to no merit? Priorties, Priorities
RHOA’s Kenya Moore Admits to Being A Video Girl, But Denies Dating Jay-Z
Did RHOA’s Kenya Moore and Jay-Z have a romantic relationship?
Not quite. Recently, Kenya posted an older picture of her and Mr.Carter together. If you remember, Kenya portrayed Jay-Z’s love interest in the video for Jermaine Dupri’s 1998 hit, ‘Money Aint’ A Thang.’ Twittersphere blew up and rumors and began to swirl about the pair. The former Miss USA took to Twitter to dispel the rumors:
Baauer Apologizes to Harlem For Viral Sensation “Harlem Shake”
If you haven’t been under a rock in the past few months you’ve for sure came across the new rendition of the “Harlem Shake” performed by DJ Baauer. It’s been the #1 song in the U.S. and has become a viral sensation that’s even been mentioned by the likes of MSNBC.
The “dance” however has seen its fare share of controversy.
Most coming from outraged Harlem residents who feel that the new dance craze exploits the Hip-Hop culture and makes a mockery of the original “Harlem Shake” dance that originated from it. After weeks of backlash an apology letter from Baauer himself has surfaced.
Baauer
Dear Harlem,
I’m sorry so much of the world thinks you dress up in fuzzy animal suits and superhero costumes and do a weird dance that you don’t do because of a song I made.
I didn’t mean for any of this to happen, I swear. I was just trying to make a goofy dance song—like Yello’s “Oh Yeah,” from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, remember that one? Like that. And besides the zipper synths and growling lions and whatnot, I needed a catchy snippet for the hook. So I sampled the part of Plastic Little’s “Miller Time” where dude says, “I’ll punch you in your face/And do the Harlem Shake.” It’s not that great of a song or anything. And they’re not even from Harlem, those guys, they’re from Philadelphia, like me. I just needed something to plug in there, and that part fit with what I was doing.
I feel really bad about everything’s that’s come of it since—the kids from Australia making that video, then all those Internet nerds, then seemingly everyone else on the planet, following along, getting in the spirit, making their own version like a bunch of lemmings jumping into a fjord in Norway. (Hey! There’s an idea! A Harlem Shake video where everyone’s dressed like lemmings, and they dance right off a cliff!) Did you see the one the fucking Mitch McConnell’s campaign staff made? If not, don’t look it up. It’s… it’s not good.
And I feel even worse seeing as how there already was a dance called the Harlem Shake—a real one, a pretty cool one, too, that had actually originated in Harlem and stuff, that G. Dep and them did in that video back in 2001. G. Dep’s Child of the Ghetto album, by the way? Totally underrated. Excellent album, front to back. That’s sad what happened, with him turning himself in for the murder from 20 years ago and all. But that was a stand-up thing that he did.
Anyway, like I said, sorry. It was an accident.
Sincerely,
Baauer

I’m sorry he doesn’t owe anyone a apology. He said long ago that it wasn’t about Harlem. A real apology would be from the rappers who call women BITCHES Apologize about that then we’d be getting somewhere! And if you really want to talk about a Harlem Shake I have one word for you who complains about this....GENTRIFICATION! That is really shaking Harlem!
