Singer Janelle Monae, who just released her "Primetime" single featuring Miguel, covers the latest issue of Vibe Vixen where she dishes on her upcoming album The Electric Lady (September 10).  Inside, she described what it means to be an "Electric Lady" saying, "An electric lady is quirky, unafraid, epic and ‘nicety’—that’s when you’re being nice and nasty, noble and naughty, all at the same damn time.”

When discussing how how life has changed since she entered the music business, Janelle said, “I’ve evolved. When you realize it’s your responsibility to be a leader and create the world that you want to see, you have to do it. It’s my responsibility to create music and come up with ideas that keep my community first.”

"The Butler" Takes Top Honors For Second Week At The Box Office

For the second weekend in a row, "The Butler" reigned at the top of the box office for the week of August 23-25, 2013

The bio-drama about a butler who served at the White House during multiple administrations nabbed $4.7 million on Friday and reached a three day total of $17 million.

Still strong is second spot was the Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis' comedy "We're the Millers" with a take of $13.5 million for the weekend.

Rounding out the top five in earmarked earnings are Lily Collins' "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" ($9.2 million) in third, "The World's End" ($8.9 million) in fourth, and Disney's animated tale "Planes" ($8.6 million) in fifth

 

 

Kim Kardashian’s Bestie Jonathan Cheban Attacked For Bragging On Instagram

Kim Kardashian’s bestie Jonathan Cheban may beg to differ.The 32-year-old publicist who is thick as thieves with Kim, was almost robbed and not in some dark alley. What happened? Cheban was visiting the Hamptons and posted a picture of his watch and location during lunch with a friend

On Instagram, he wrote:

I think I overdressed my wrist today with my @jacobandco …22 karat’s is a bit much for daytime LOL. cc @richkidsofinstagramm

Later, he posed for pics with a group of female fans, when an onlooker grabbed him and tried to grab the watch from his wrist. Cheban fought back and a security guard jumped in. The attacker got away without the watch. A source told the NY Post,

He left the Hamptons. He was there for a private event. He was only [in town] for three hours. Disaster. He had to go to Europe . . . so he didn’t want to deal with [police] reports.He wasn’t badly hurt . . . his wrist got banged up.

Making headlines, without Amanda Bynes tweeting about him, Drake revealed dual covers for his upcoming album Nothing Was The Same on

After sharing the news about his VMA's performance on Sunday (August 25th), the 26-year-old rapper also tweeted about his upcoming album's release date.

"New Album Date...NOTHING WAS THE SAME SEPTEMBER 24th...www.ovosound.com," he tweeted.

Also crediting the album's artwork, Drake shared, "NWTS cover by @KadirNelson."

The dual image is reportedly inspired by his new single "Started From the Bottom." It features a little boy, considered to be a young Drake looking up at the rapper.

Not Moesha’s Little Brother! Marcus T. Paulk Arrested After Putting Girlfriend In The Hospital

If you were to read the headline Marcus T. Paulk arrested for domestic violence. It would be unfortunate but it probably wouldn’t mean much to you. But honey, Marcus T. Paulk is the 26 year old actor who played Brandy’s younger brother, Myles Mitchell, on her hit show “Moesha.”

According to TMZ, the actor turned himself into authorities after allegedly putting his girlfriend in the hospital. He was arrested not too long ago.

Paulk’s girlfriend, a singer who wanted to be identified by her stage name Andi Roxx said the altercation started at a Beverly Hills nightclub called Confidential. She said she and Paulk got into an argument because he wasn’t paying her enough attention.

Roxx says by the time they got home the fight had turned physical. Paulk punched her in the chin, she swung back and busted his lip open and he hit her again, this time in the stomach. She says he also punched her in the stomach and told her to get her stuff and get out.

Roxx went to the hospital the next morning with internal injuries. Law enforcement were sent to the hospital where she told them what happened.

Police contacted Paulk and his attorney arranged for the actor to turn himself in.

J. Cole Says He Might Not Be Successful If He Was Dark Skinned

In a recent interview with BET, J. Cole questioned whether he could have attained the same success if he was dark skinned.

Before you berate the MC with slander, know that this hypothetical scenario came in the context of a conversation about Trayvon Martin, race in America, and colorism in the Black community.

"I can't say it for sure but I just think we're still in America. We're still Black Americans. Those mental chains are still in us. That brainwashing that tells us that light skin is better, it's subconsciously in us, whether we know it or not… still pursuing light skin women," Cole explained.

Considering the history of colorism in Hip-Hop — especially in music videos — we'd have to say that his comments were warranted. However, what the Born Sinner creator said next could raise a few eyebrows:

"But Barack Obama would not be president if he were dark skin. You know what I mean? That's just the truth.  I might not be as successful as I am now if I was dark skin. I'm not saying that for sure, I'm still as talented as I am and Obama is still as smart as he is, but it's just a sad truth… I don't even know if this is going to translate well into text and people not hearing what I'm saying, but it's a sad reality. So I can only naturally assume it's probably easier for a light skin male rapper than it might be for a dark skin male rapper. It's all subconscious s**t, nobody's aware — I think that s**t still subconsciously affects us."

Cole's opinions would make for an interesting debate, but history certainly suggests otherwise. Remember that the late, great Notorious B.I.G. once boasted, "Heartthrob, never, black and ugly as ever," while he sat comfortably at the top of Hip-Hop's ranks.

Jay Z & Beyonce Did Not Purchase The Regal Movie Theater In Chicago

Can’t believe everything you hear! The drama began Tuesday evening when entertainment and hip-hop website Gumbumper posted the story as an “exclusive,” citing unnamed sources. Gumbumper later changed their headline to reflect they were reporting on a rumor but by then the fire spread. Afrocentric magazine Jet ran their own story, sourcing Gumbumper.

We were skeptical here at Chicagoist when we first read the news for many reasons, not the least of which was why would a couple so associated with New York City be willing to plunk down $250,000 for an old venue in a hard-to-reach location? A search of the Regal’s property index number with the Cook County Recorder of Deeds proved fruitless for us, but NBC Chicago reported this afternoon the earlier Gumbumper story was false. There is a contract in place to sell the building but a source told NBC Chicago Jay Z and Beyonce aren’t involved with the deal.

Seems like the theater is just not the type of investment Hov and Bey are into.

Chicago is the old stomping grounds of the Carter’s friend, President Obama. That’s the most powerful man in the country right now…shouldn’t he be trying to get involved?

 

 

Dwyane Wade's Foundation SUED Over Marching Band Mishap, Drum Stick Went Upside Woman's Head

A Chicago woman is suing Dwyane Wade's foundation claiming she was injured during a Wade's World charity event when she was struck by a bass drum mallet as a marching band charged down the aisle.

Andrea Alexander brought the $50,000 lawsuit saying she was seated in an aisle seat at the foundation's "Chicago Has Talent" event last year when a drummer from a high school marching band hit her in the head with his bass drum mallet. She says she suffered severe and permanent injuries.

Andrea feels Dwyane's foundation is at fault for negligently allowing the band to play in the narrow aisles. She is also suing the venue and the band's high school.

So far, Wade's World has not responded to the lawsuit.  Severer and permanent injuries though?  Hmm....

Halle Berry enjoyed dinner at Madeo in Beverly Hills, with her husband Olivier Martinez, Halle dazzled in black mini dress with a smokey blue overlay, which she paired with black sandals; and the couple was spotted as they headed into the restaurant for the evening.

Halle and Olivier, who are expecting a son together, wed in an intimate ceremony at a chateau in France’s Burgundy region, back in July.

 

 

 

Katt Williams Sentenced To ‘Probation’ For Attack On Store Employee

Comedian Katt Williams‘ career seems to be on a downward spiral with all of the troubling events that he’s been dealing with for the past few years. Last year we told you guys about the incident at Target in which Katt was seen slapping a male cashier. Well, Tuesday in Yolo Superior Court, according to the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office a judge ordered Williams to stay away from the store employee, barred Williams from possessing a firearm for 10 years and directed him to pay a $200 fine, according to information on the district attorney’s website. When the incident happened Katt was immediately was banned from the department store and ordered to serve a year of informal probation as part of a plea entered this week.

Williams’ attorney entered a plea of no contest to misdemeanor battery on the comedian’s behalf.

Beyonce Shows Off A Blonde Bob At Lunch With Blue & Hubby Jay-Z

Beyonce Knowles is spending her Mrs. Carter Show world tour break chillin' out with her fam.  And trying out new hairstyles.  The short shorts wearing mom of Blue Ivy was sporting a new blonde bob in Miami Thursday afternoon.

First, she chopped all her hair off (or....chopped up a wig, it's still unclear) last week.  And Thursday, Beyonce and her hubby Jay-Z and their baby girl Blue Ivy hit up Sylvano Ristorante Italiano in Miami Beach to show off the "Grown Woman" chick's new look. 

 Bey was rocking a brand new inverted bob with a cute headband and cropped Name Brand tank to boot:

Beyonce's long time hairstylist Kim Kimble said that she wasn't the one who cut the style Bey unveiled in photos last week. But she also didn't flat out confirm the new look was Bey's actual hair.  However, she did allude to it.

Khloe Kardashian Is Ready To Be A Single Mom – She Is Done With Lamar

Life & Style Magazine has come out with a cover story of Khloe Kardashian. In it according to the magazine, Khloe expressed the desire to continue trying for a baby with or without Lamar. Preferable without him, especially after another mistress came out with her story.   This was the final straw that forced her decision.  As many know, Khloe has been trying for a baby since day one of her marriage 4 years ago.

Lamar on the other hand, already has kids from a previous relationship. That could be why he never thought it would hurt Khloe the way it did, after one of his side pieces admitted to trying for a baby with Lamar. Either way the insensitive jerk in no longer needed in the baby making department.

She wants to have her baby herself and if that means new exercises and total diet overhaul then that’s what she’s going to do and I’m glad for her. She really wants a baby and despite earlier rumors it wasn’t because she wanted to compete with Lamar’s ex.  Some women don’t need to stay in unhappy relationship in order to raise a baby. (I’m looking at you Kourtney). They’re strong enough to do it on their own. If this whole cheating scandal did anything positive then it would be helping Khloe leave Lamar and stand on her own.

LeBron James Voted Most Popular NBA Player Over Kobe Bryant

According to the latest ESPN Sports Poll, for the first time in four years, the Miami Heat’s star player LeBron James is the most popular player in the NBA over Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Nearly 13 percent (12.9) of NBA fans said James was their favorite player this season, allowing him to best Kobe Bryant (12.5) for the first time since the 2008-09 season. That was the only other season when James passed the Los Angeles Lakers star, the top pick by fans for five of six years from 2006-07 to 2011-12.

After “The Decision,” James’ approval rating slipped drastically. For his final season in Cleveland, 15.6 percent of fans called him their favorite, according to the ESPN Sports Poll taken after the 2009-10 season. But for his first two years with the Heat, James was called fans’ favorite player by 10.2 and 9.4 percent, respectively.

James reportedly benefited from rises in votes from both the African American and younger demographics. Over 20 percent of African Americans voted James as their favorite player of the 2012-13 NBA season, compared to only 16 percent who voted for Kobe Bryant, and 18 percent of kids aged 12 – 17 said they preferred him, while only 15 percent preferred Bryant.

After James and Bryant, there was a significant drop off in voting, with Kevin Durant coming in third place with 3.6 of the votes, and after that was Derrick Rose (2.8 percent) and Dwyane Wade (2.6), rounding out the top five.

4th Annual Diversity Affluence Brunch & Awards

in Sag Harbor, Diversity Affluence founder Andrea Hoffman hosted the Fourth Annual Diversity Affluence Brunch and Awards ceremony at B. Smith’s Restaurant (1 Long Wharf St. Sag Harbor, New York). The afternoon honored Vista Equity Partners Chairman/CEO Robert F. Smith, model/philanthropist Alek Wek, and Sphinx Organization Founder Aaron P. Dworkin.

Hosted by actor Malik Yoba, who provided the perfect blend of humor and tidbits to keep the afternoon flowing, guests enjoyed a Moet & Chandon champagne toast to kick off the afternoon. That was followed by a brunch of crab coquettes, lobster roll sandwiches and an assortment of desserts.

This unique brunch, which was inspired by the book Black Is The New Green: Marketing to Affluent African Americans, attracted many notables including Black Enterprise founder Earl Graves, Tichina Arnold — who treated the guests with a musical selection – Emil Wilbekin, Calcie Cooper, Geneva S. Thomas and RaVal Davis.

JoJo Sues Blackground Records for Release

JoJo wants out. After being stuck in limbo for seven years, the singer is suing Blackground Records for her release.

According to the New York Daily News, JoJo has filed a lawsuit against Da Family Records and Blackground Records claiming that under New York State law, minors cannot sign contracts that last more than seven years.

JoJo and her parents signed a contract in 2004 when she was 12. She argues that her contract was up in March 2011.

The 22-year-old has had a highly-publicized battle with her label and has not released a commercial album since 2006′s The High Road.

She recorded her third album and even shot the packaging, but the label would never give her a release date. “Blackground Records lost their distribution deal through Interscope, and if you can get the answer from them on why that happened, that would be a miracle,” JoJo told BuzzFeed in May.

In the meantime, she released two free mixtapes including 2010′s Can’t Take That Away From Me and 2012′s Agápē.

Her fans have written to Blackground and organized “Free JoJo” movements on Twitter to bring awareness to her label situation.

Rihanna Asks for Free Clothes After Suing Top Shop

Rihanna continued to ask for free clothes from Top Shop even after filing a lawsuit against them for unauthorized use of her image.

Rihanna's stylists continued to ask Topshop for clothes for the star despite the fact she is suing the retailer, a court heard today.

The singer claims the printed sleeveless white top - which hit the rails in Topshop last year - may have tarnished her reputation by leading her fans to believe the garment was 'genuine' Rihanna-approved merchandise.

But the retailer's lawyers today said that - while the singer is claiming the top blighted her image - it has not stopped her entourage contacting Topshop to ask for clothes for Rihanna half a dozen times since the lawsuit was launched.

A barrister at London's High Court today claimed Rihanna's representatives had asked Topshop for products for the singer on '10 recent occasions', and said her 'shopping habits' were testament to the retailer's own considerable reputation.

Of those 10 occasions, six came after Rihanna launched proceedings against Topshop, said Geoffrey Hobbs QC.

Mr Hobbs said: 'It is not in dispute that Rihanna is a celebrity (but) the reputation of Topshop is also material to the allegation of misrepresentation.

'Rihanna's own shopping habits provide compelling evidence of Topshop's reputation in fashion wear. (There are) 10 recent occasions on which her representatives have contacted Topshop asking for products for her to wear.

'We note that six of these requests post-date this dispute,' the barrister said.

The multi-talented artist is signed on as the host of Style Network’s “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous”, a reboot of the 1980s and ’90s series of the same title. Nick Cannon is a superhost! “To be a part of Style’s re-imagination of this iconic show and follow in the footsteps of the legendary Robin Leach is a dream come true,” Cannon says of his new job. “Even though I am fortunate to have certain luxuries, sometimes, I am even amazed by what people with money have and do. I want to remind people that just because you might be rich and famous, it doesn’t mean you have to take yourself too seriously.”

Toni Braxton Loses Rights To 27 Songs

Toni Braxton loses the rights to 27 of her songs this week after ending her 12 year marriage to Keri Lewis.

R&B singer Toni Braxton no longer holds the rights to 27 of her songs including”You’re Making Me High,” “How Many Wars,” and “Always” after losing them in a bidding war.

The Six-time Grammy award winner filed for bankruptcy in 2010 claiming debts as high as $50 million, according to TMZ.

TMZ reports that after settling debts of $150,000 the singer was allowed to purchase the copyright to more than two dozen of her songs for $20,000 when put up for sale earlier this month.

However, Ross M. Klein doubled the singer’s offer and swept the music catalogue out from underneath her.

Klein can now profit from those tracks.

Braxton still owns the rights to her most famous hit, “Un-Break My Heart.”

This isn’t the first time the 45-year-old singer has run into trouble.

Braxton previously filed for bankruptcy in 1998 for debts of $3.9 million. This year, debtors tried to collect $754,000 in fees earned for overseas performances.

Back in February there were rumors that Bobbi Kristina Brown was vowing to cut off her grandmother Cissy Houston because she was furious over Cissy's decision to publish her memoir 'Remembering Whitney

Apparently Bobbi Kristina is still holding a grudge because Cissy has had to resort to sending an open letter to the media in a desperate bid to reach her grandchild...

Cissy Houston writes,

Dear Krissi

I love you. My heart is full. I don’t know where to begin.

You may think I don’t understand you and what you’re feeling but remember, Baby, I lost my mom when I was just a child. So, I do know some of the sadness and loneliness of your life since your mom passed away.

Although I know her spirit is with you always, I cry with you and for you. I grieve with you and for you … for all of the days and nights you need to tell her something or ask her advice or just hear her voice … and she’s not there. For all of the times when you need to put your head in her lap or feel her arms around you and she’s not there … For the good and happy times you want to share with her; for the fun and laughter you enjoyed together, but she’s not there … for every day and every night you just miss her … I know.

She was your mom and she was my child and Krissi, I loved her too, more than you might imagine. I know you were upset that I wrote my book, “Remembering Whitney," but I hope one day you’ll read it and understand that I just wanted to let the world see some of My Nippy—the sweet, friendly, loving little girl with the extraordinary beauty and boundless talent, who grew into the superstar and musical icon the world saw. I want people to know—fans and critics and ordinary people alike—Nippy was a whole person, and like all of us, she was good and bad AND she was my joy!

Krissi, all I want for you is your good health and your happiness. I want you to have a good life that you can be proud of. Do I want you to get married in the near future? No, I don’t. I think you’re too young and I wish you’d wait. But that’s because I’m Grandma. I’m supposed to worry about you. I’m supposed to wonder If Nick or ANY man is good enough for you, My Baby’s Baby. I’m not angry with Nick and I don’t think, nor did I ever say anything hurtful about him to anyone. I have NEVER publicly commented on your personal life and I don’t intend to. So in the future when you read or hear that Cissy Houston said this or Cissy Houston said that, be confident in the knowledge that it isn’t true.

I try to believe that when your mother passed away the world decided that you belong to them as she did. I’m trying very hard to trust that people who make comments or offer their opinions about you are sincere in their desire for you to be happy. I can only hope they come to realize the best they can offer you is their prayers.

Krissi, as many years as I’ve lived and as many experiences as I’ve had I know I don’t have all of the answers. I do know this, Baby Girl: God’s got you and so do I.

Super producer Pharrell and designer Mark McNairy take another shot at sartorial excellence with their Billionaire Boys Club collaboration: the Bee Line Fall/Holiday 2013 collection.

This strong assortment of clothing build on the fashion savvy duo's first attempt (of the same title) released last year.

Skateboard P and McNairy, both known for their styles, put their spin on essential menswear pieces like varsity jackets, denim, a bomber jacket, sports coat, and more.

The pair also had a noticeable affinity for plaid and various other prints this time around.

Bee Line happens to be the duo's second collaboration of the year; the first was BBC Black, due to release this fall.

Traci Steele and DJ BabeyDrew have a reality show within a reality show that is the ultrapopular ”Love & Hip Hop Atlanta.” Their relationship, even though they’ve been broken up for seven years, resembles the weather in the Caribbean islands they are from. Your head and eyes constantly jerk back and forth because of their propensity for darting in out of each other’s conversations, finishing each other’s sentences, cutting each other off, and volleying insults and compliments with equal aplomb back and forth to each other. They constantly intercept one another’s thoughts and take it in the opposite direction. You would need a compass and a map to try to figure out where they are going to take the next question.

Even if you didn’t know the couple, it wouldn’t take long to figure out that the pair, despite their defunct relationship that produced a 7-year-old son, remain so close that they practically breathe the same air.

So when rolling out sat down for an interview with DJ BabeyDrew and DJ Traci Steele, we knew from the jump that this was not going to be a normal interview. But then again, Steele and Drew are not your ordinary pair.
